Unbeievable as it seems now, when Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy went their separate ways it was not at all clear who would have the better post-Uncle Tupelo career. Son Volt won the first battle, with Trace bettering Wilco’s A.M., but it's pretty clear who won the war.
